Learning Together Outdoors
How we run our days, and why we do it this way
We didn’t start this community because we wanted to run a programme.
We started it because something felt missing.
Children (and adults) are spending more time indoors, more time being managed, assessed, hurried, and less time doing the things humans have always done best: moving, noticing, building, wondering, resting, taking small risks, being part of a group that cares.
Outdoor learning, for us, isn’t a trend or a timetable slot.
It’s a response.
A response to overwhelm.
To pressure.
To systems that often forget that learning is relational, physical, emotional and deeply human.
We exist to create space — real space, outdoors — where people can slow down, feel safe enough to be curious, and grow in ways that aren’t always measurable but are profoundly felt.
We believe:
Children learn best when they feel safe, seen and trusted
Nature is not a “resource” but a relationship
Community care is as important as individual achievement
Learning happens through play, movement, conversation and shared experience
This community exists to hold all of that — gently, responsibly, and with intention.
Not perfectly. But thoughtfully.
How We Run Our Sessions
Our site in Bellahouston is blessed with a huge amount of space to roam, swing, climb, jump and run!
From the outside, outdoor learning can look wonderfully free — children exploring, climbing, building, playing.
And it is.
But underneath that freedom is a lot of care, preparation and responsibility.
We plan sessions that are structured enough to feel safe, and open enough to allow real exploration. We work with clear routines, shared agreements, and consistent adults so children know what to expect and who to turn to.
Care is central to everything we do:
Robust safeguarding and child protection practices
Clear boundaries around risk, consent and supervision
Adults trained in outdoor learning, first aid and group care
Ongoing reflection as a team — what’s working, what needs adjusting
We don’t believe in “hands-off” as a philosophy.
We believe in attuned presence.
Adults are there to notice, support, step in when needed, and step back when appropriate. We model respect — for each other, for the environment, and for different ways of being.
Inclusion matters to us. That means listening, adapting, and acknowledging that everyone arrives with different needs, experiences and comfort levels.
This isn’t about producing a certain kind of child.
It’s about creating conditions where many kinds of children can thrive.
